Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Three closely linked values held by many organizations that are working to be supportive of different groups of individuals, including people of different races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders, and sexual orientations. They are encapsulated in the acronym DEI, and are recognized as critical factors contributing to business performance.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are often grouped together because they are interconnected and it is only in combination that their true impact emerges. Let’s dive into their respective definitions:
- Diversity refers to who is represented in the workforce, resulting in a precious diversity in the way people think. Examples of diversity in the workplace are gender, age and ethnic diversity.
- Equity refers to ensuring fair treatment for all individuals, regardless of their identity, by establishing norms, practices, and policies that mitigate bias and prevent identity from influencing opportunities in the workplace.
- Inclusion refers to the extent to which organizations create an environment where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute meaningfully. It involves actively creating spaces that enable individuals to thrive professionally and personally.
