Climate Action Tracker (CAT)
The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) is an independent scientific body dedicated to monitoring and evaluating governments’ decarbonization initiatives in alignment with the Paris Agreement’s objectives; to restrict global temperature increases to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit the rise to 1.5°C by the end of this century.
The CAT assesses and categorizes individual countries’ climate pledges, focusing on the ambition and adequacy of their contributions to global climate goals. It serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and the public to track progress toward the Paris Agreement.
The information provided by the CAT includes evaluations of countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), policies, and current emission trends. The goal is to hold governments accountable for their commitments and promote increased ambitions in climate action. The CAT then aggregates country action to the global level, determining the likely temperature increase by the end of the century. The tracker also develops sectoral analyses to illustrate required pathways for meeting the global temperature goals.
